Portraiture

web-mingus-o
Gatsby’s, under new management, had been doing a lot of work & promotion for the world cup, even being mentioned in Maclean’s magazine. They did not, however, wish to be typecast as a sports bar as they have live music & fine dining as well.

The annual Jazz festival window competition was the ideal opportunity. Having already worked with Gatsby’s & having already won the competition once we were a perfect match.

I put together a window design, and we got a bunch of old records for which I designed labels from my jazz greats portrait series. The result looks fantastic, and with live patio jazz they’ve completely relabeled themselves as much more than a great place to watch the cup!

dixieland
I was commissioned by one of my clients to paint a window for a contest put on by the jazz festival. I got four other businesses to participate, and put together a mural commemorating the evolution of jazz. The piece works from dixieland to big band, then bebop on to present day. The piece includes portraits of Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Cab Calloway, Dizzie Gillespie, Charlie Parker, Thelonius Monk, Charles Mingus, Miles Davis, and the Shuffle Demons respectively.
Heinrichs Family
Portraits for which I was commissioned

Jeremiah
These are some examples of portraits of interesting faces.

Characters

1
These are some images I put together for a graphic novel project.

I was working from a script, though I chose panel separation. I tried to use varying styles as I wasn’t yet sure what they wanted.

Though the project didn’t materialize, I really enjoyed the process of realizing a story visually, and look forward to this kind of work.

tiger
Klassy Kids is a children’s store that does consignment sales and new clothes, toys & accessories. I designed these critters to work with the ones on their website and brightened up their store with the paintings.

The monkeys represent the owner’s three little boys.

Sarah
These are examples of my caricatures that are used for commercial purposes.

Dumb Dogs
This was an expression of my disdain for my mother’s two labs.
When that vacuum starts you’d think the legions of hell were after ‘em
The Green Man
These are some examples of illustrations in various media in which I develop a visual representation of a character described from non-visual sources.

Harper eats Scruffles
Before the 2008 election Harper had a photoshoot with a small kitten as a publicity gesture. Harper had a very strained smile, and the kitten appeared terribly uncomfortable. This inspired the first of my political cartoons in a long time, with many more to follow.

Fine Art

woof
These are some examples of drawings using natural subjects.

Study of Mercury
These are some examples of my drawings based on the human figure, using a variety of media.

Fire Elemental
Theses are some examples of my studies of the human figure in the medium of paint.

Marc's Tree
I worked one on one with this client in order to produce an artwork for his home that accurately represented him and where he was in their life. The finished pieces are studies of the same tree with shared focal points which can then be rearranged to be a different piece every time.

Rebirth
These are some paintings I made in the past.

Night & Day
These are some examples of my pieces that I intend to represent psychological landscapes.

Miscellanemess

Card
Here are some examples of my calligraphy work

Dragon Mask
I have always enjoyed working with masks-sometimes as sculpture and sometimes to wear as part of something else.
Dumb Dogs
This was an expression of my disdain for my mother’s two labs.
When that vacuum starts you’d think the legions of hell were after ‘em

Window Paintings

acrobat
Scott Colwell, owner of Certainly Cinnamon is continually supporting both my business & local events.

In this case it’s to help promote the buskers festival 2010. The acrobat with the hoop is my version of the buskers logo, while the juggler is a reference to one of the images making up the promotional poster.

dancer
One of my clients wanted to spruce up his windows, and is an avid supporter of local events. I got in touch with the event coordinator and established the correct mi’kmaq version of “welcome” and designed a dancer that relates along with the font to the membertou 400 design concept
Happy Santa
More Christmas windows!

Hallowtree
I worked with businesses to develop Hallowe’en windows.

Captain Sub
This is something I’ve been doing for years. I work with the business to develop images that represent it, then apply them with acrylic paint on windows, usually reversed from inside.

Romi's Cupid
These are some examples of window paintings I designed for some of my clients for Valentine’s day.

Bookerfly Collector
These are some paintings I designed in order to add some fun & visibility for John’s big sale. I’ve included the original sketches from which I worked in this post. The theme was, of course, moving piles of books.

Easter Storefront
It’s a BUNNANZA !! This is the first time I’ve done windows for easter. A welcome change from Santa & such. (Don’t get me wrong, I love Santa)

Murals & Sign Graphics

Gatsby's-mural
Gatsby’s had set up a beautiful stage area to hold live performances but had a bare wall behind & an electrical port cover that did nothing for the ambiance.

I put together this parchment style mural that has a reflective element to ensure every picture taken of performers shows Gatsby’s in a great light.

A classic example of various elements working together for mutual benefit!

halifax hash sans leaf
This is a sign I made for Kirk Dexter of Halifax Hash. Kirk makes raw organic chocolate, and needed something to both speak of his company’s identity and draw an eye in a crowded market.

The work is done in a calligraphic style, where every stroke must be accomplished with a single fluid movement.

The plant is the Cacao, with one of its pods fallen and open.

Side Sign
I produced signage for the cafe based on a woodcut and font the owner had selected. All works are oil/acrylic paint on wood.
